Which laptop ?

Postby oliviertij » Mon Sep 12, 2011 2:46 am

Hello.

I'm about to buy a new laptop, especially for 5.0 and v3

Could you give some advice for the choice, please ?
I'd like a " competition model " :D

Thanks

I don't want to get into details, but if I were you I'd stay away from Toshiba.

Thanks Farined.

More specificaly, I'd like a laptop which would not crash 10 times a day with v3, and I'd like to work more easily in smooth mode.

Please ?

I use two Lenovo "W" models W701ds (discontinued monster) and W510, for Rhino 4 and 5, TSpline and Vray with no problems. The chips now have Intel Turbo that can spike the speed to help the Rhino single processor stack. Hope this helps. Others are flashier but basic black works all day long.

Hi, thanks , yes it helps.

I had a look at the w series, and fully customized, it costs the same as the top the sony viao, about 5000$ ( in France, I know it would be less expensive in US ). So, which one is the more appropriated for rhino and Tsplines, plz ?
And I guess there's no need to take the top in all characteristics ?

Hi Oliviertij:

I wouldn't like it either if my system had frequent crashes. I read that Heath, over the Rhino newsgroup, likes his new Dell XPS 15" Laptop.
You may want to take a look at the discussion labeled: Laptop advice:Dell XPS 15z. I suppose you could always send him a message if you have some specific questions.

I have had a couple of Dell systems in the past, and I was not too thrilled about them then, but from what I read, they seem to be better now.

Hello farid, thank you for your answer.

Atm, I'm working on a Dell, studio 17. I'm quite glad, but as I said, it crashes very often, with Tsplines, because ( as many people says ) of my ATI 5650. And even if it's a got computer when you want to play WoW, it's quite slowly when I'm working tsplines in smooth mode.

So maybe, more than a particular trade, I should look for specifics components ? But it seems difficult to build a laptop as you build a desktop pc.

I meant : a good computer .

And I saw what Heath wrote about his Dell, indeed he seems satisfaied, but he only talk about Rhino, not Tsplines. Don't you think it might be a difference in the requirements ?

Cheers

I understand what you mean, and yes It would be nice if we could custom build our own laptops. Unfortunately, it is not going to happen anytime soon as laptop case and screen designs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

I think your new laptop should have at least a quadcore i7 chip, and a 1gb Nvidia card. Try getting the fastest chip you can afford as well as a good video card; the rest of the hardware (drive and memory) can easily be upgraded later if need be.

In the meantime you can try downloading Advanced System Care and their game booster plugin, you should be able to see some performance improvement with your system (ok, this is a suggestion and not a recommendation, in other words "use at your own risk"). It seem to work quite well for a freeware app.

I want to upgrade from my old HP laptop to some new one. I thought of Lenovo or Dell. After reading your recommendations I think Dell will be good enough. Most of my friends are happy with this brand's computers and laptops, so I think it's a good choice.

Here are my thoughts on hardware to run T-Splines:

There are some things that don't matter very much. You need to have a mid-range graphics card, but there's not much need for a very-high-end graphics card (at least, not for T-Splines itself). T-Splines doesn't use multiple cores very well, so having many cores on the CPU does not help. It's better to have a two very fast cores than eight sort-of fast cores. In general, the single most important thing for T-Splines is to have a fast CPU.

T-Splines will often use a LOT of memory, so a 64-bit operating system with a lot of memory is very helpful (4-8 GB is probably plenty). Having a big hard drive doesn't help; we don't use the hard drive for much.

I don't have specific recommendations about brand names -- I mostly buy the developer desktops for use in our office. Every time I buy a new laptop, I start reading reviews again :).

Well, my boss bought me one.

Not the one I would have choose, but not so bad :

Dell Precision M6600
i7 2820QM 2.3ghz
Nvidia quadro 3000M

Well, rather disappointing. Even if it doesn't crash 5 or 10 times a day as my i5 with AtiRadéon used to do, it doesn't calculate more quickly...

left of centre here.. I am not sure how this is possible, but my macbook, in bootcamp, runs rhino4(32) and tsplines3.2(32) faster than my dedicated CAD standup pc.

Macbook = i7 2.4Ghz 4GB Ram and 1GB ATI HD6770

STandup = i7 2.9Ghz 16GB Ram and 1GB Nvidia Gtx460

I have to conclude that hardware matching by apple and the faster ATI card are the reason?

I would say that the mac would be my preferred machine except the screen is too small and that stupid delete key that cannot delete anything.. It also tends to build up lots of heat.

Hello everybody.

Especially both of you.
Juan, it's a 17".
But I'd prefer a 15, as I work with an additionnal screen, when not in the train, of course.
Well, my boss decided.

I insist on my deception, as my old i5, even with my cursed ATI Radéon, seems not so old. I mean, I bought it 2 years ago, 1300$, and that new Dell Precision, which cost about 4000$, wasn't worth it. If you allow me to say.
I don't see a real difference, for example when changing something while displaying in smooth mode, or the time it take to run a boolean operation with a lot of objects.

Otherwise, I'd like to say : I LOVE TSPLINES !
