stuck in smooth mode..?

A support and feedback forum for Autodesk T-Splines Plug-in for Rhino users.

stuck in smooth mode..?

Postby mcg » Sat Apr 24, 2010 4:37 pm

It seems to be pretty common to get stuck in box mode until points are welded, etc., and smooth mode becomes accessible again. This is covered in the manual.

I have the opposite problem. This surface is stuck in smooth mode.

The nose was created in Rhino with a loft. Then the lofted surface was converted into t-splines and edited. T-splines is a great way to improve and refine a Rhino loft, by the way.

The next step was to extrude the rear edge all the way to the tail of the airplane.

Some peculiarities.

The attempted extrude kicked the model into box mode, or something like it, but it was curvey and distorted. In order to achieve an orderly extrusion and keep the shape normal, it was necessary to first turn off symmetry. After that the extrude worked fine.

But now we are trapped in smooth mode.

Attempts to Insert Edges have either failed or produced strange, wildly curved edge loops.

Thank you for your insights.

Hmmm, strange, I can go between BoxMode and SmoothMode with this model. What version of T-Splines are you using?

The receipt says version 2. I purchased it October 24. Probably it has been upgraded, to 2.2 I think. Where would I look to learn the version number?

There is a distinction between smooth mode and box mode, illustrated in the attachments. The box mode shows tiny facets.

Maybe it is okay? I am used to seeing large scale facets in the Box Mode. These facets are barely perceptible.

Many thanks for your insights,

Michael

To amplify on this problem, I attach an image made by extracting the cage of lines, in yellow.

The Box Mode shape should, I think, closely resemble the shape of this yellow cage, which has expansive facets. I did not expect tiny facets embedded in the surface. Best, Michael

You can see what version are you using if you go to the T-Splines option :tsOptions: Check VersionInfoScreenshot.

It seems that you have the option "Smooth T-Mesh" checked. This option is usefull when you want to see/work with a T-Splines surface in BoxMode but beeing able to see it partially smooth. This reduce the memory needed and is faster to work with.
If you want to see the BoxMode in large scale facets (default) just uncheck this option. Check SmoothTMeshScreenshot.

Ah! Many thanks. That solved it, I have the more familar Box Mode now.

Interestingly, although the smooth mode version looked pretty good, the box mode reveals a very assymetical structure, which I will now repair.

The version shows a build of Nov. 20, 2009. I notice you are using 2.3. Is this out of Beta testing now?

Many thanks for your excellent analysis and help this morning, Juan.

Best regards,

Michael

T-Splines 2.3 is a RC (release candidate),.......so, it's still on a testing period. Works pretty good so far.
